Different Forms Of Democracy One Is Not Better Than The...

There are many different forms of democracy; one is not better than the other. They are just different. Schmitter and Karl lay out basic attributes needed in order to have a modern democracy. Schmitter and Karl look at seven of Robert Dahl’s conditions in order to have a modern political democracy. These condition include â€Å"elected officials having control over government decisions about policy, elected officials being chosen in frequent and fair elections without people being persuaded by the use of threat, all adults having the right to vote, freedom of expression without the danger of severe punishment, citizens right to seek other information, and lastly citizens having the right to form relatively independent association or organization, including independent political parties and interest groups†(Schmitter Karl 1991, 81). Schmitter and Karl decide that there needs to be two more minimal conditions in order to have a democracy. These conditions include â€Å" popularly elected officials must be able to exercise their constitutional power without being endangered to overriding opposition from unelected officials and the state must be self-governing, meaning that it should be able to act independently without some constraints imposed by a dominating political system† (Schmitter Karl 1991, 81).
